JIU JITSU LIBRE
WHO WE ARE
Jiu Jitsu Libre is a charitable 501(c)(3)organization that provides free martial arts lessons to underserved youth in the District of Columbia, with a focus on neighborhoods that have limited access to affordable and quality recreational services. Our mission is to empower young people with the skills and confidence they need to lead healthy, active lifestyles and build positive futures for themselves.
Enhancing Socio-Psychological Development:
A 2020 study demonstrated that practicing BJJ contributes to increased self-control and pro-social behavior. Unlike mixed martial arts (MMA) practitioners, BJJ practitioners experience a decline in aggression, showcasing the unique psychological benefits of this martial art. By fostering discipline, respect, and teamwork, BJJ empowers individuals with the tools necessary to navigate social interactions and cultivate harmonious relationships.
Meet the Team
Coping with post-traumatic stress disorder
A 2019 explored the therapeutic potential of BJJ, particularly in the context of military veterans coping with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Their study revealed clinically meaningful improvements in PTSD markers, anxiety, depression, and reduced alcohol intake. The practice of BJJ, akin to exposure therapy, empowers individuals to confront their fears in a controlled environment, facilitating healing and personal growth. This demonstrates the unique ability of BJJ to serve as a complementary therapeutic element, supporting individuals in their journey towards mental well-being.
Reducing Aggression and Hormonal Reactivity
A groundbreaking 2021 study highlighted the reduction in aggressive behavior and hormonal reactivity among participants engaged in martial arts training. The intervention not only improved cognitive functioning but also decreased aggression levels. Oxytocin reactivity predicted a reduction in aggression, while cortisol reactivity was associated with increases in self-esteem. These findings suggest that BJJ offers a transformative outlet for individuals, effectively managing aggression and promoting emotional well-being.
WHO WE SERVE
During the 2021-22 school year, there were approximately 36,460 seats in afterschool programs serving 88,482 public school students in the District. This brings the participation rate in OST programs to slightly above 41 percent. At the high school level, the District would need 12,927 seats to fill the gap between need and capacity to provide subsidized afterschool programs to all youth in grades 9-12 enrolled in public schools.
Juvenile crime spikes during the after school hours from 2pm to 6pm...
In the District of Columbia, juvenile crime peaks from 2 to 6 p.m. on school days, with about 47% of all juvenile crime on those days occurring during the hours following the last school bell. Washington, D.C.’s kids are among the more than 11 million children nationwide who still find themselves in an environment devoid of adult supervision during the after school hours. In all, 26% of children in D.C. are unsupervised after school.
